Melanie Schnell will discuss the research she undertook in Sudan for her award winning novel, While the Sun is Above Us. She will address how she came to know women who had been embroiled in a decades-long war, her understanding of their roles in the conflict, and how these experiences informed her novel thematically in terms of women understanding their positions in relation to one another. Melanie grew up in rural Saskatchewan, has lived in Regina, Vancouver, Toronto, Boston, Colombia, Thailand, Kenya and Sudan, holds a B.Ed in English and an MFA in Creative Writing. She has published fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and written for television. Winner of the Saskatchewan First Book and City of Regina Awards for While the Sun is Above Us, she spent the better part of a year living in South Sudan in the midst of civil war, researching her novel.
